Chennai is undergoing rapid expansion, with a significant increase in the construction of residential units each year. This growth is accompanied by a growing demand for water supply. To illustrate the scale of this demand, it’s worth noting that the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) receives over 1800 new applications at its central office every month. Nevertheless, a significant portion of these applicants, along with many residents, often find themselves perplexed or uninformed about the necessary procedures and documents required for expeditiously processing their applications. Consequently, a majority of them end up having to visit the office multiple times, as reported by a spokesperson from the Metro Water Department.
Building plan and completion certificates (with a notary’s seal) and proof of payment of property tax and infrastructure development charges. A surety bond, attached on a stamp paper of Rs 20, with the above mentioned documents should be submitted to the Executive Engineer at Metro Water’s headquarters located at No 1, Pumping Station Road, Chintadripet, Chennai – 600 001
After you’ve submitted the required documents to the executive engineer, you’ll need to make a payment of Rs 7,500 for a single unit at the counter located on the ground floor of the head office. Be sure to obtain an acknowledgment for your payment.
Sanction orders for the water connection will be issued within 7 days from the application registration date. The sanction orders will be provided by the Area Engineer (AE) in your locality. You can expect to have the water connection established within 30 days from the registration date. Additionally, officials will install a water meter on the pipeline at your premises to monitor the water supply quantity and calculate associated charges. Upon receiving the connection, you’ll be issued a Metrowater card valid for five years. Entries for water supply charges will be recorded on this card as soon as the water connection is established. While future payments can be made online, the card is issued initially.
The monthly fees for Metro Water services differ between the core areas and the extended areas of Chennai Corporation. Core areas are charged Rs 50 per month, whereas areas that were included in the Corporation limits in 2011, including Ullagaram – Puzhithivakkam, Ambattur, Alandur, Madhavaram, and Meenambakkam, may have to pay up to Rs 80 per month. This difference in charges is due to the fact that the Metro Water department laid pipes in the core areas many years ago. Since then, material costs and wages have significantly increased, leading to the additional charges for the extended areas
